Starting up an online business for someone who has always worked offline, “in the real world”, can be quite difficult. For many people it’s like a whole new world and it can be overwhelming because many things that work offline don’t really work online.

The principles of marketing, for example, are the same, but the ways of how to operate, how to talk to clients and customers, and how to get people visit your “shop front” are entirely different.

My aim is to provide you with useful information about this daunting task and make it even fun! Because if you ask me, I think that having an online business is a very satisfying and interesting experience. There are many advantages of having an online business over a bricks and mortar business:

• you don’t need to stock items
• you can take a day off without disappointing your customers
• you can outsource as little or as much work as you want
• you don’t need to hire employees who sit in your office and surf on Ebay
• you can really show off your knowledge by creating information products
• having a website or several websites is so much cheaper than having a store
• your start up costs are so much lower
• you don’t run into a lot of risk
• you can look after your kids while you are working
• you have time available for your family because you can take an hour off without notice
• you don’t need to commute and spend money on gas
• you can work in your pyjama if you like
• you don’t need expensive suits to be successful
• you can even work when you are away on holiday, all you need is a laptop
• you are able to make your passion a job
• you are able to express yourself
• you can look big while your business is actually small, no one knows

These are only a few advantages.

But with these advantages come, of course, also some disadvantes, namely

• you need to understand where and how to find clients and customers
• you need to be disciplined without having someone telling you what to do
• you may feel lonely from time to time
• you need to be technically savvy when you want to do it all yourself
• you need to put in quite a lot of work into your technical skills if you don’t have someone to help you
• you need to be focused
• you need to be open to learning new skills
• you need to persist even when the going gets tough

All common sense? Yes.
